Greetings World, Readers, Spambots and Trolls.

Growing up in the 21st centaury is a rather interesting topic, one in fact that I have recently been set for my English homework. I chose to write this for you because, well… I’m not feeling very inspired today and can’t give you the normal dose of my life and opinions today.

So, the twenty first centaury, there are lots of different things that could be considered advantages and disadvantages to growing up now, compared to any other time period. Lets start with disadvantages I came up with.

The first is simple, there are no knights and castles. The Medieval ages are my favourite time period from history, and King Arthur, the knights of the round table, all of that seems like a lot of fun to me, and I’d love to be a nobleman or a knight!

Another thing, growing up these days, I can’t leave education until I’m 17, and this very much upsets me at the moment. I’m not really sure if I want to go to college yet, it doesn’t sound fun, education, teachers and classes are really boring me at school…

Development is another reason, development of properties. 1000 years ago, land was common, it was easier to obtain and there was more of it for sale. In comparison it was relatively cheap, and you could buy a plot of land and build your own home… this sounds awesome, and its upsetting that you can’t do it these days. You have to go through planning permission, thousands of pounds to buy the land, where it is available, there are far more houses these days…

Maybe growing up now is not all bad though, life is ‘pretty good’ right now I guess you could say, this might not apply to me or other people personally, but there’s a lot of problems with the past. My main problem with living back in the dark ages or medieval times, is that, well… I couldn’t do this. I couldn’t spend my time blogging to you, my loyal readers. The internet, and the computer are a relatively new invention of the last 50 years or so, and I’m growing up in a great time for computing. At this point in time, a big change is happening, we’re moving away from your standard mouse and keyboard, to touchscreen; on phones, tablets, laptops and even your standard desktop monitor. This is really interesting, it opens up a lot of possibilities in what you can do, for example, you can set certain strokes for passkeys, have less on your desk, and lots of interesting new mechanics in video games. We’re also improving graphics cards, CPUs and just about every other thing. The graphics compared to the past are amazing, we even have 3D gaming, and 3D movies in our own homes now, and High Definition is becoming a more common occurrence.

Another thing that is great, medicine and science… in the past, things like measles used to kill a lot of people, and you’d be lucky to live to age 5 (although this still is a problem in a few parts of the world), these days, life expectancy is going up almost everywhere. The oldest person that’s lived and been recorded currently is 122 years old! I find this rather insane, that you can live for a century and a quarter!

I guess educations improved here… thats good, I know stuff now, and yeah well, on to some “two sided” arguments…

Pollution, these days, we’re all about global warming, are air down here is a lot cleaner that 100 years ago, where everything was coal powered and there’d be soot in the air, and rivers are a lot cleaner… when people aren’t dumping shopping trollies in them. However, that considered, we’re currently destroying our ozone layer a lot more, or atleast we’re more aware of it…

Dangers/Security, people have said its more dangerous to go out these days, and that all our parents had lots of freedom and they were all safe outside. I think thats a lie, we’re more aware of whats going on now, but it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen before. It did. And the fact that people get attacked, well, look, Jack the Ripper… ok true, most children aren’t prostitutes here, but this crime did happen before!

Anyway, to conclude this rather long post, I’m glad to be growing up now, all though if I could pick one other time period, it’d clearly be the medieval ages (common, who doesn’t want to be Robin Hood!), the medicine, technology and science makes me happy that I’m growing up now.

Hello Year 10

So, if your surprised by the title of this post, your probably in Year 10 at my school…

For some reason you’ve navigated to my own little corner of the giant world wide web, which really surprised me because I’ve been getting a lot of traffic from you guys, and I wondered why? Why are you reading this? Why are you on my personal website?

Oh and you may want to view my FAQ before pestering me in the corridor or class!

That Was Scary…

Ok, so that must of been the most scary thing I’ve done in my entire life, or atleast in the last few years. And for those that were’nt just in my business studies this morning, I’ll tell you what happened.

So, business studies, yeah, its basicly studying business… duhh! Well basicly we had to do a presentation of how we were going to market some new product, basicly a presentation of these BBC Bitesize pages applied to a real situation. Ok, so we’ve had 5 or 6 lessons to work on it. Of course, its supposed to be a group activity but I prefer to work on my own when I can’t work with my “friends”. Ok, first task, coming up with a product, this was really tough, despite dabbling in web design, I’m not very creative at all… so ok, 2nd lesson, I wonder what data my school actually stores on me, and I look at my school diary, andn the IT network terms of use type thing. Doesn’t tell me, great. So some how my train of thought changes to Terms and Conditions, and the fact that nobody ever reads them… well, lawyers do, but meh, you catch my drift. Anyway, so basicly somehow, with the help of my teacher I come to the idea of a legal translator thingy…

So, thats 2 lessons out the way. 3rd lesson, we have cover (or a supply, basicly the same thing, well they’re not, but I’m not going to go into the detail about that). So I do very little, have a flick through PowerPoint templates. I find a nice one, even comes with a stack of slides, so I change a couple and delete some and then I start to fill in pricing and promotion.

The next lesson, cover again, this time the head teacher… ok, so “hey, why is a headteacher teaching business studies”, well, news flash, schools are a business, just a different sector (and other things, but again, thats a different lecture). So I spend half the lesson listening to him, and the other half mocking up the product popup in Dreamweaver and applying some dropshadow and the popup over the Simple English Wikipedia privacy policy. Fine, ok, thats a decent amount of work for that lesson.

Next lesson, cover again! Yay! I’m over the moon about that! Not. I do hardly any work again. So, the next lesson, its Monday morning, we have cover again… yes, I know. Ok so Sir is in shortly and tells us we have to present that Friday, ok, so we had to finish our presentations that lesson… a bit better, I’ve basicly almost finished my presentation. Friday’s here, so yeah, no one feels they’ve finished their presentation, so time to fine tune it. Done, well, basicly.

Then next lesson, (this Monday), we’ve got the presentations, some last minute polishing and hoping the teacher won’t notice me so I don’t have to do it. Ok, so I’m last to do mine, big deal, I’m confident walking up to the front, I turn round and put my notes down on the desk in front of me.

Darn. It suddenly hits me. I’m presenting in front of a class of “Dragons”, 20 odd people and staring directly at me… so, anyway, I go on to my first slide after a couple of attempts to start, and a bit of giggling to myself. Ok, so it all starts going well, until about the third slide in, by this time, I’m well into talking about the marketing, my legs start shaking and I probably start going really red. Ok, so I explain everything blah blah blah, then, its question time… I get a couple of questions that were along the exact lines of “Huh? So what does it do?” so I explain that like 3 more times, and then its time for “investiments” of thumbs up… yeah, well most of the class, 13 thumbs up I think… cool.

Well, I normally don’t get that nervous, I’ve abseiled down tall rock faces and other things, and I start shaking when giving a quick presentation in class? What? Oh, and the marketing plan is available for download below, just so you can see what I’m on about.

We all use chargers, for our phones, toothbrushes, batteries, laptops and more… and how many of us leave them plugged in when we’re not actually using them to charge anything. A recent study conducted by EON, an energy provider found that in Britain we waste over a one hundred million pounds each year (£100,000,000) by leaving chargers turned on when we’re not using them.

The study calculates that a household could save up to £60 a year, which, may not seem like much, but what could you buy with an extra £60 a year? Well, quite a bit, and this number is growing. With more mobile phones, iPods and other gadgets sale figures predicted to rise steeply by 2020, what are your charger habits?

Many of us are users of facebook, its the second most visited in the world, falling behind only Google. Now, Facebook is largely a free service, so how does it make its money?

Well, thats fairly simple, advertising which makes up the majority of its income along with Facebook Credits. Ok, so Facebook makes most if its money with advertising, no big deal right? Wrong. To successfully advertise, you have to aim your adverts at the people you want to attract, and this is where facebook has been criticised. The worlds most visited social media site uses clever eavesdropping techniques to listen to everything from users political opinions to sexuality, religous beliefs and even their location! It listens to users likes, statuses, and a whole lot more just to work out who should see certain adverts.

So, again, Facebook collects data, so does almost every website, no big deal right? Well, wrong again, Facebook collects all this data, and then sells it to its advertisers, lets give you an example now of this software at work… (see here)

“OMG OMG OMG!!” – Correct, this is slightly scary, however the EU is clamping down on this, in the near future, users will have to opt-in for this targetted advertising. The European Commission who are looking into this, have said that they will be changing the current data protection laws to take into account the new advances in technology and call for service providers, especially social media sites to be more transparent in what data is stored on their users, and what is done with it.
